“Title: Increasing Agricultural Productivity Through the Implementation of an Integrated Farming System in Pengjaran Village, Kintamani District, Bangli, Bali”
Thursday 8 October 2020 was the culmination of a series of demonstrations against the Omnibus Law and the Job Creation Law carried out by students, trade unions, and the community. Students from various campuses in Indonesia simultaneously filled the main roads and surrounded government buildings to voice their disagreement with the decisions taken by members of the DPR and the Central Government. Most of these demonstrations turned into riots, causing losses from various parties, such as what happened in front of the Bali Governor’s Office on October 8, 2020.
In contrast to the above, on Friday 9 October 2020 students at Ganesha University of Education were spending their energy transporting pieces of iron and pipes which would be used as raw materials for making biofloc ponds. Under the hot sun, several students who were assisted by middle-aged residents were also seen mixing sand and cement next to the residents’ cowshed. The spirit of cooperation which is one of the spirits of Pancasila and a characteristic of the character of the Indonesian nation can be seen to have been able to be actualized well in remote areas of the Bali Mountains.
Through the Holistic Village Development and Empowerment Program (PHP2D) initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ganesha Education University students apply various kinds of innovations in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries at the Manik Tirtadi Livestock Farmers Group (KTT) in Pengjaran Village, Kintamani District, Bangli, Bali. Apart from aiming to foster a spirit of cooperation and train students to care for the communities around them, this activity has the main mission of increasing agricultural productivity and increasing the community’s economic income through the implementation of an Integrated Agricultural System (Integrated Farming System)at the Manik Tirta Livestock Farmers Group (KTT) in Pursuit Village.
“So far, agricultural, livestock, and fishing activities carried out by the community are still carried out partially so that they have not been able to provide a significant impact on improving the community’s economy,” said Luh Ayu Martasari head of the PHP2D team. Through the Integrated Agricultural System initiated by Undiksha students, it is hoped that they will be able to create an ecosystem by combining agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries, they will be able to reduce farmers’ production costs which have been very high and utilize agricultural, livestock and waste. fisheries that have so far been wasted.
I Wayan Pardi, S.Pd., M.Pd., as the student supervisor said “This activity is one of the students’ real actions in transferring modern agricultural techniques. The Integrated Agricultural System emphasizes recycling methods by utilizing plants animals and even waste as partners to create an ecosystem that resembles the way nature works continued that “Farmers will later obtain more diverse sources of harvest/income starting from chayote plants, catfish, hydroponic vegetables, selling cows/chickens, oranges, chilies, fertilizer and biogas and most importantly there will be no agricultural, livestock and fishery waste. will be wasted”.
To realize this initial goal, Undiksha students developed several innovations, including the construction of a biogas reactor to utilize cow manure which has not yet been processed optimally, the creation of a fish pond with a biofloc model, the creation of a hydroponic installation to produce organic vegetables, the cultivation of chayote, and training on processing cow dung into organic fertilizer and other innovative programs.
“In the future, hopefully, more students will go into fields like this to help farmers, so that students can become a light to enlighten farmers who are still unsure about technology,” said I Nyoman Sukanadi chairman of the Manik Tirta Livestock Farmers Group (KTT) in Pursuit Village. To realize this goal, Undiksha students collaborated with several NGOs, and professional staff and received support from BEM and lecturers at Ganesha Education University. This service activity has been running since September 19 2020 and is planned to be completed at the end of November. “Students must be the driving force of development, not an obstacle to development itself” emphasized I Wayan Pardi, S.Pd., M.Pd.
