Denpasar – As part of a collaborative effort between the Denpasar City Election Supervisory Board and the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at Undiksha, a face-to-face election supervision socialization event took place on Thursday, October 31, 2024. Themed “Strategies to Encourage Active Involvement of Young Voters and Youth in Participatory Supervision of the 2024 Simultaneous Elections,” the event featured Prof. Dr. I Nengah Suastika, S.Pd., M.Pd., Dean of FHIS Undiksha, as the keynote speaker. The event was held at the Puri Ayu Hotel in Denpasar.
In his presentation, Prof. Suastika emphasized the role of youth in participatory election supervision throughout the campaign period, quiet period, voting stages, and vote counting. He discussed key concerns such as campaigns conducted in places of worship, the misuse of state facilities, money politics, and proxy voting. He also explained the five theoretical voter types: 1. Rational and Critical Voters, those who vote based on candidates’ visions and missions, and track records, 2. Rational Voters, who consider the candidates’ programs in addition to visions and missions, 3. Pragmatic/Transactional Voters, who base their choices on perceived benefits, 4. Traditional/Identity Voters, who vote based on commonalities like ethnicity, religion, region, or heritage and 5. Apathetic Voters, those who are indifferent and do not participate in voting. This event underscores the importance of youth engagement in promoting transparent and fair elections.
